Shopify Academy has quietly become one of the better vendor training operations, mostly because Shopify's business depends on a large population of agencies and freelancers being competent on the platform. That alignment shows. The developer track covers app development, Liquid, the APIs, theme customisation and Shopify Functions in enough depth that somebody working through it seriously comes out able to build things, which is a higher bar than most vendor academies clear. The commerce track handles B2B, point of sale, internationalisation and marketing, and the solutions architecture material covers technical planning, checkout customisation and data modelling at a level I would not have expected to find free.
That last track is the pleasant surprise. Most vendors will teach you the buttons and stop. Teaching people how to think about data modelling and checkout architecture on your platform is a longer term bet and it is the right one. The pricing split is sensible.
The courses are free. The Verified Skills badges, which are proctored assessments running roughly $149 to $249, are the paid layer, and because they are actually proctored they carry more weight than the free-quiz-free-badge model that everyone else uses. Whether they are worth it depends entirely on whether you sell Shopify work. For a partner agency putting credentials on a pitch deck, plausibly yes.
For a merchant running one store, no. The AI question is where expectations need managing, because that is presumably why anyone lands here from a search about AI training. There is a Shopify Admin Guided Tour that introduces Sidekick, the built-in assistant, and there is session content on using AI in Shopify development, including a Learn with Scott video on the subject. That is roughly the extent of it.
There is no structured path on building with Shopify's AI surfaces, no serious treatment of how Sidekick handles ambiguous merchant instructions, and nothing I would describe as a curriculum. For a company that has put AI at the centre of its product messaging, the training has not caught up, and it is worth saying plainly rather than pretending a guided tour counts. The sales and partnerships courses are the weakest section, covering selling strategies, discovery techniques and prospecting. This is internal enablement material made public.
If you are a Shopify partner it may be useful. If you are not, it reads exactly like what it is. One practical annoyance: the academy has moved from shopify.com/academy to academy.shopify.com to shopifyacademy.com, with redirects in place but a lot of stale links in the wild pointing at intermediate stops. Trivial, but it makes searching for a specific course more irritating than it should be.
Three point seven. A serious free curriculum for people who build on the platform, with a proctored credential that means something in the partner ecosystem, marked down because the AI training is a tour rather than a course and a chunk of the catalogue is sales enablement.
