OtherAround five to seven hours per certification·Certifications $395 to $595, a few free courses

Moz Academy

2.6

Charging up to $595 for roughly five hours of SEO video in a year when Ahrefs and Semrush give better material away is a difficult position to defend, and Moz does not really try.

What We Liked

  • Structured curriculum with a defined path rather than a loose playlist
  • Local SEO material reflects genuine Moz expertise in that area
  • Exam and badge give some external accountability if you need it
  • A small free tier exists including 30 Days of SEO

What Could Be Better

  • $595 for the flagship certification is indefensible against free alternatives
  • Around 4.5 hours of curriculum for that price is very thin
  • The badge carries little recognition outside Moz's own community
  • Moz's own standing in the industry has declined since Siteimprove acquired it

Detailed review

There was a period when Moz was the centre of gravity in SEO. Whiteboard Friday was appointment viewing, the Beginner's Guide was the standard reference and a Moz badge meant you had been paying attention. That period ended some years ago and the academy pricing has not caught up with it. The SEO Essentials certification is $595.

Keyword Research, Local SEO, Technical SEO and SEO Competitive Analysis are $395 each. The curriculum behind the flagship is roughly four and a half hours of on-demand video plus activities and an exam, which the marketing puts at five to seven hours of total commitment. Set that against Ahrefs Academy, which gives away twenty two hours including a link building course and an answer engine optimisation course, or Semrush, which gives away several dozen short courses and the certificates with them. The Moz material is not four hundred dollars better.

It is not obviously better at all. It is competently made, reasonably sequenced and taught by people who know the subject, which is the floor rather than the ceiling for a paid product in this market. The strongest case for paying is local SEO, where Moz has real institutional expertise built over many years of the Local Search Ranking Factors work, and where the material genuinely covers ground the free courses skim. If you work on multi-location businesses or you run an agency serving local clients, there is a defensible argument for that one course.

I would still want to see the syllabus against what Sterling Sky and Whitespark publish for free before spending, but the argument exists. For everything else the argument is weak. Technical SEO at $395 competes with an enormous quantity of free material from people actively working on large sites, much of it more current. Keyword research at the same price competes directly with the Semrush and Ahrefs courses on the identical topic at zero.

Competitive analysis is the thinnest of the set. There are a handful of free courses, including 30 Days of SEO and How to Use Moz Pro, and those are worth the time they cost. The badge is the other thing being sold and it is worth being blunt about it. In eight years of looking at CVs for SEO roles I have never once seen a Moz certification move a decision, and I have seen plenty of them.

What moves decisions is a site you grew, a case you can talk through, and evidence you understand why something worked. A certificate from a tool vendor is a signal that you spent money, not that you can do the job. Moz has been part of Siteimprove since 2023 and the brand has been quieter since. That is not a reason on its own to avoid the courses, but it does bear on how much external recognition the credential is likely to carry over the next few years, and recognition is most of what you are buying.

Two point six. The teaching is fine and the local SEO track has real depth. The pricing belongs to a version of the market that no longer exists, and anybody paying $595 here has almost certainly not looked at what is available free.

The verdict.

Do the free Ahrefs and Semrush courses first. If you finish those and still want a paid certificate, the local SEO one is the only Moz course where the price is arguably connected to genuine specialist depth.
