Microsoft AB-620: AI Agent Builder Associate (Copilot Studio)

4.0

The first Microsoft exam that treats Copilot Studio as a serious agent platform rather than a chatbot builder. The syllabus is modern, with MCP, A2A, computer use and test sets, and it is the most practical credential for low-code agent developers in Microsoft shops. It is narrow, though: everything runs through Copilot Studio and Power Platform.

What We Liked

  • Integration is 40 to 45% of the exam: MCP servers, custom connectors, REST APIs, Azure AI Search, Foundry and Fabric data agents
  • Includes agent evaluation with test sets, which most agent courses skip entirely
  • ALM objectives (solutions, environment variables, Power Platform Pipelines) reflect real delivery work
  • Counts as a prerequisite for the AB-100 Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect Expert

What Could Be Better

  • Assumes Power Fx, Dataverse and Power Platform environments already, so it is not a starting point
  • Locks you into Copilot Studio; little of it transfers to LangGraph, the OpenAI Agents SDK or similar
  • Brand new, so practice material is thin and some third-party prep is guesswork
  • Copilot Studio features like computer use are still moving quickly

Detailed review

AB-620 is the newest of the Microsoft AI exams I have looked at, and the search data shows it: almost nothing before April 2026, then 720 searches in August and still climbing. The full title is Designing and Building Integrated AI Agent Solutions in Copilot Studio, and passing it gets you Microsoft Certified: AI Agent Builder Associate. The audience profile is pitched at a developer, not a citizen maker. It expects Power Fx, Dataverse, Power Platform environments, adaptive cards and Microsoft Foundry, plus intermediate knowledge of RAG, orchestration, MCP and the A2A protocol, and existing experience configuring agents with knowledge, instructions, tools and topics. The outline has three parts. Planning and configuring agent solutions is 30 to 35%: identity strategy, channels, responsible AI and governance, reusable components, agent flows with human-in-the-loop steps and error handling, and topics with custom prompts, HTTP requests, generative answers and variables.

Integrating and extending agents is the heaviest at 40 to 45%: Copilot and Power Platform connectors, Azure AI Search, computer use, MCP tools, REST APIs, multi-agent collaboration, plugging in a Foundry agent or a Fabric data agent, A2A, Foundry model catalog prompts and Application Insights monitoring. Testing and managing agents is 20 to 25%: building test sets, choosing evaluation methods, reviewing results, then solutions, environment variables and Power Platform Pipelines for ALM. I like this syllabus a lot more than I expected to. The evaluation section is the standout. Most agent courses, paid or free, never show you how to check whether an agent is actually getting answers right, and Microsoft has made it an exam objective.

The ALM content is also something real projects need and tutorials ignore. If you pass this having genuinely done the work, you can ship and maintain a Copilot Studio agent in a real tenant. The obvious limit is lock-in. The concepts transfer, since MCP and A2A are open standards, but every skill is exercised through Copilot Studio screens and Power Platform plumbing. A Python developer building agents with open frameworks would learn more from a code-first course and get a credential that matters more to their employers. The exam is also very new.

Expect the objectives to shift as Copilot Studio changes, and treat third-party practice tests with suspicion until the community has had time to sit it. Microsoft Learn and a developer tenant are the best preparation. I give it 4.0. The best credential going for low-code agent builders on the Microsoft stack, and a good stepping stone to AB-100.

The verdict.

If you build agents for a living in a Microsoft 365 organisation, this is the certification to get in 2026, ahead of PL-200 or the older Copilot Studio Applied Skills. If you build agents in code outside the Microsoft stack, it is not worth your time.
