The closest thing the field has to a conference proceedings for practitioners, and all of it is free. Quality varies enormously between talks, so the skill is knowing which ones to watch, but the best of them are better than anything in a paid course.

Detailed review

Academic fields have conference proceedings, where practitioners present what they did and everyone else reads it to find out what is possible. AI engineering has not had an equivalent, partly because the useful knowledge sits inside companies and partly because the field is too young for the institutions. The AI Engineer conference series is the nearest substitute, and the part that matters for anyone not buying a ticket is that all of the talks are released free on YouTube afterwards, with slides and transcripts published alongside. The recent World's Fair alone ran twenty nine tracks with around three hundred speakers, and the accumulated archive across the events now runs to many hundreds of sessions.

That archive is the resource, and it is genuinely valuable. The reason is the kind of talk that dominates it. A good conference talk from an engineer at a company that runs an AI product in front of real users contains information that essentially never makes it into courses, because course material describes the approach that worked and conference talks describe the four that did not. You get the eval harness someone built after their prompt change silently broke a fifth of queries, the retrieval architecture that had to be rewritten when the corpus tripled, the cost problem that appeared at scale, the latency budget that forced a smaller model, and the organisational detail about who reviews outputs and how.

That is what the job is, and hearing it described by someone who lived through it is worth a great deal. The track structure is also useful in a way that a random YouTube search is not, because it lets you sit down and watch six talks on evaluation from six different companies and start to see which practices are converging and which are one team's local solution. The currency is the other advantage. The lag between a technique being adopted and being presented here is a few months at most, against a year or more for structured courses, so if you want to know how teams are handling something right now this is where to look.

The problems are the ones every conference archive has, amplified by the field's commercial intensity. Quality varies enormously. Within the same track you will find a rigorous engineering talk and a thinly disguised product pitch, and the titles do not reliably distinguish them. Vendor sponsorship shapes any conference programme, and this field has more money sloshing around it than most, so a meaningful proportion of speakers are there to position a product.

That does not make their talks worthless, since the people building these tools do know things, but you should look at the speaker's affiliation before accepting a benchmark comparison or a claim that a particular approach is now standard. There is no structure, no sequencing and no prerequisite guidance, so as a way to learn a subject from nothing it is close to useless. Someone who does not already know what retrieval is will not learn it here, they will hear thirty people assume it. And the archive ages unevenly.

Talks about durable engineering problems hold up well, while talks about specific frameworks from two years ago are now historical documents, and nothing in the interface tells you which is which. The practical way to use this is as a reference library rather than a curriculum. When you hit a real problem at work, search the archive for that problem, watch three talks from teams who solved it, and steal what fits. Used that way it is one of the highest value free resources in the field, and I would put a good talk from a practising engineer above most paid course modules on the same topic.

My 4.3 reflects exactly that, an outstanding library with no organisation, a real sponsorship undertow, and a requirement that you already know enough to separate the engineering from the marketing.

An outstanding free resource for a working engineer who already knows what they are looking for. Treat it as a reference library to raid for specific problems rather than a course to work through, and check who the speaker works for before you accept a benchmark.
